Ontraport review

CRM, email, payments, and membership in one system, for businesses that want fewer moving parts.

Our take

Is Ontraport right for you?

Ontraport’s pitch is consolidation: contacts, email, automation, order forms, payments, membership access, and an affiliate programme behind one login, on one set of data. When it fits, the appeal is obvious: no webhooks to babysit, no debugging which of five tools dropped the customer.

The automation and visual funnel builder are where it’s strong, and why it has stayed on this shelf. Complex conditional logic stays readable, which is the difference between a system somebody maintains and one everyone is afraid to touch. There’s also real flexibility in the contact record: custom fields and objects shaped to how your business thinks about a customer, with automations running against them. For a larger organisation that has outgrown a generic list tool, that combination is the argument.

It fits a business that sells through the platform, where the consolidation pays for itself in problems you never have.

The softer parts are the commerce-facing ones. The offer pages and ecommerce tooling work, but they’ve always felt blunt next to purpose-built alternatives. The WordPress membership plugin, once a real selling point, degraded over the years; check its current state rather than assuming either way. And the old rule still applies: if you only use the email module, you’ve bought a business operating system to send newsletters. Be honest about which half of the platform you’ll run.

Can your AI run it? We grade Ontraport a B- for AI access (September 2026): its official MCP writes contacts, deals and custom objects, enrolls people in automations and handles invoices and payments, but automations, emails and pages are read-only. See the full grades.

Common questions

Questions about Ontraport

What people usually want to know before committing, answered the way we'd answer them on a call.

What is Ontraport genuinely best at?

The automation builder, and it isn't close. Its visual funnel builder makes complex, branching logic legible where many platforms never manage it, and it's the part we actively enjoy working in rather than tolerate. If your business runs on sequences that change based on what someone bought, when, and what they did next, this module justifies the platform.

Is Ontraport still worth choosing today?

For a specific shape of business, yes: one that sells through the platform and will use the CRM and payment layer properly. The consolidation is real: with order forms, membership access, contact records, and automation on one set of data, a whole category of integration problems disappears. If you only need email, you'd be buying a business operating system to send newsletters, and dedicated tools are better, cheaper, and nicer to use.

How is the ecommerce and offer-page side?

Functional and a bit blunt. The order forms and sales pages do the job, and payments are wired into the automations, but next to a dedicated checkout or page builder they've always felt plain. It's a fair trade when payments need to trigger the rest of your system, and a poor one if the page itself is doing the persuading.

Can Ontraport run a membership site?

Yes, natively, and that's historically been a reason to pick it: access is granted and revoked by the same automation that handles the payment. Its WordPress membership plugin was good in its day, then degraded. We haven't run it recently enough to say whether it has recovered, so check its current state rather than trusting our memory or the marketing page.

Ontraport or ActiveCampaign?

Ontraport if you want payments, membership access, and the CRM in the same system as the email; ActiveCampaign if email automation is the centre and you'd rather have the deeper, better-integrated marketing platform, handling commerce elsewhere. The deciding question is whether money moves through the platform. If it does, Ontraport's consolidation earns its keep. If not, you're paying for a payment and membership layer you'll never switch on.
