Printful review

Print-on-demand merch with no inventory, no minimums, and no boxes in your garage.

Our take

Is Printful right for you?

The pitch is that the risk disappears. Someone orders a hoodie, Printful prints and ships it, and you never bought inventory, rented storage, or drove to a post office. For an audience-first business testing whether merch is a real line or a nice idea, that’s the right shape of bet.

The use people overlook is that it doesn’t have to be a business at all. We set up our own shop mainly to put our work on t-shirts and mugs and send them to clients and our team as gifts, with no storefront ambitions attached. Branded swag you order as you need it, without a minimum print run sitting in a cupboard, is a good reason to have an account.

The integration is the other half of the value. It plugs into Shopify and WooCommerce cleanly enough that the store feels like yours rather than a storefront bolted onto someone else’s catalogue.

Two costs, one obvious and one not. The obvious one is margin: print-on-demand costs several times more per unit than bulk printing, and the fulfilment window is longer than customers now expect: fine at low volume, poor at high. The one nobody warns you about is product churn. Apparel lines get discontinued fairly regularly, and each time you get a notice to pull that item and find a replacement: tedious upkeep on someone else’s schedule. That was our experience running a shop; it may have improved since.

Common questions

Questions about Printful

What people usually want to know before committing, answered the way we'd answer them on a call.

Do I need to be building a merch business to use this?

No, and that's the use most people miss. We set up our own shop largely to send branded t-shirts and mugs to clients and our team as gifts, with no storefront ambitions and no revenue attached. Print-on-demand is a good way to do internal swag and thank-you gifts because you order what you need when you need it. It beats housing inventory in your garage or paying for storage.

What's the most annoying part of running Printful?

Product churn on apparel. Brands and styles get discontinued more often than you'd expect, and each time you get a notice to pull that item from your shop and swap in a replacement. It's not difficult, just tedious upkeep on someone else's schedule. That was our experience running a shop; it may have improved since, so ask about it if apparel is central to your plan.

Does it work with my store?

It integrates cleanly with Shopify and WooCommerce, which is most of the value: the storefront stays yours instead of feeling like someone else's catalogue bolted onto your site. Orders flow through, Printful prints and ships, and the customer experience carries your brand, not theirs. If you already run a store on either platform, adding merch is a short job.

When does print-on-demand stop making sense?

When volume gets real. Per-unit costs are several times what bulk printing costs, and the fulfilment window is longer than customers now expect: a fine trade at low volume, a poor one at high volume. Use it to test demand without risking capital, then revisit the maths once you know. Plenty of businesses never need to, because the merch was always a gift, not a product line.
