Our take

Is VideoHive right for you?

For a small team, the value is simple: a title sequence or set of lower thirds that would take a motion designer a day costs less than lunch and is done this afternoon. When the alternative is shipping with no graphics at all, that’s an easy call.

It’s best used for the parts nobody looks at, like transitions, background loops, and b-roll to cover a jump cut, where “competent and invisible” is the whole brief.

It goes wrong on the parts that are supposed to be you. Your intro is a brand asset, and a recognisable template announces that you bought your identity off a shelf, precisely the wrong note for anyone selling expertise. Use it for the plumbing, and pay a human for the parts with your name on them.

Common questions

Questions about VideoHive

What people usually want to know before committing, answered the way we'd answer them on a call.

Why pay for footage when free libraries exist?

The licence, mostly. Free libraries are good, and we use them, but when footage goes into a monetised YouTube video, the paperwork matters more than the price: you want a licence you can point at without ambiguity. That's when our editor still buys rather than searching free, and it's a small cost against the hassle of a claim on a video you've already published.

Do you still use VideoHive much?

Less than we used to, and Canva is why: its included library covers a good share of what we'd previously have bought here. VideoHive earns its place for what a general library doesn't do: properly licensed b-roll, motion graphics, and After Effects templates. We keep credits on an Envato account so it's there when the edit needs it, not as a first stop.

What should you not use it for?

Anything that's supposed to be you. Transitions, background loops, and b-roll over a jump cut are utility work, where competent and invisible is the brief. Your intro is a brand asset, and a recognisable template there says you bought your identity off a shelf. Use it for the plumbing; pay a human for the parts with your name on them.
