Epidemic Sound review
Subscription music and sound effects, cleared for commercial use: no per-track licensing, no copyright claims.
Is Epidemic Sound right for you?
Epidemic Sound replaces the per-track licensing dance with a subscription: one flat fee, the entire catalogue of music and sound effects, cleared for commercial use so your video doesn’t collect a copyright claim the week after it goes up.
That clearance is the real product. The catalogue is large and much of it is good, but people pay for not having to think: no negotiating rights per track, no discovering mid-campaign that the music under your edit isn’t licensed for that use, no claim landing on a client’s channel. For anyone publishing on a rhythm, that’s the difference between a creative decision and a legal one.
Two cautions. First, the tiers aren’t interchangeable: a Personal plan covers your own channels, while client work, brand content, and ads need the Commercial tier. Using the cheaper plan for client deliverables is a licensing mistake, not a billing one, and the client inherits it. Second, this is rented, not owned: clearance is tied to an active subscription, so check the current terms on published work before you let it lapse.
Questions about Epidemic Sound
What people usually want to know before committing, answered the way we'd answer them on a call.
Why pay for music when there's free music everywhere?
Because the cost doesn't disappear; it moves from a subscription line to someone's afternoon. Our own channel manager spends real time tracking down licensing for music in client videos. A copyright claim on a monetised video can divert the revenue to the claimant while you sort it out, so the exposure is real. If you publish on a rhythm, buying clearance is cheaper than proving it after the fact.
What is the actual quality of the library like?
World class, in our experience. The catalogue is large and good, and it passes the practical test easily and repeatedly: can you find a track that fits what you had in mind without settling? That matters more than raw size, because a huge library you have to fight is worse than a smaller one that surfaces the right track.
Which plan do I need?
A Personal plan covers your own channels; client work, brand content, and anything running as an ad needs the Commercial tier. It catches people out constantly. Using the cheaper plan for client deliverables is a licensing mistake, not a billing one, and the client inherits the problem when a claim lands on their channel. Check the tier against what the video is for, not who's uploading it.
What happens if I cancel?
Clearance is tied to an active subscription, which people miss: you're renting the right to use the music, not buying it. Before letting a subscription lapse, read the current terms on what happens to work you've already published, especially client video. Answer that while you still have an account.
